Fabrics to Avoid for Baby Skin | Safe Babywear Tips

🚫 5 Fabrics You Should Avoid for Baby Skin
When it comes to babywear, choosing the right fabric is not just about comfort—it’s about protecting delicate skin. Babies have thinner, more sensitive skin that is prone to rashes, irritation, and allergic reactions. That’s why knowing which fabrics to avoid for baby skin is just as important as choosing the right ones.
Below, we highlight five fabrics you should keep off your baby’s wardrobe list—and explain why.
1. Polyester and Polyester Blends
Polyester is commonly used in mass-market baby clothes due to its low cost and durability. However, this synthetic fabric doesn’t breathe well and traps heat, leading to:
- Excess sweating
- Skin irritation or rashes
- Overheating in warmer climates
Tip: Always check the fabric label—poly-cotton blends are often marketed as “soft” but still retain the synthetic downsides.
2. Nylon
Nylon, like polyester, is another synthetic fabric often found in cheap babywear, especially in outerwear or activewear. However:
- It can cause chafing
- It lacks breathability
- It may contain chemical finishes
Avoid it for everyday babywear, especially for sleepwear or garments in direct contact with skin.
3. Wool (Especially Non-Merino)
While wool is warm and natural, it’s often too rough for baby skin unless it’s extra-fine Merino wool. Traditional wool can:
- Cause itchiness
- Trigger eczema or allergies
- Be difficult to wash and maintain
4. Rayon and Viscose
Though derived from natural sources, rayon and viscose undergo heavy chemical processing. They:
- May retain chemical residues
- Can feel soft but become abrasive when wet
- Are prone to shrinking or tearing
These fabrics aren’t ideal for sensitive baby skin or frequent washing cycles.
5. Fabric with Unknown Dyes or Prints
Bright, cheap prints might look fun—but many contain chemical dyes, especially azo dyes, which are banned in several countries. These can:
- Trigger allergic reactions
- Leach color during washes
- Be harmful if chewed or sucked
